May 29      Helping to Heal Through Music and Arts and Crafts

Elaine Sims, Director, University of Michigan Health Systems’ Gifts of Art Program.

Elaine Sims has worked in arts in healthcare since 1990. Her areas of special expertise include the visual and performing arts, healing gardens, caring for the caregiver initiatives as well as the full spectrum of arts in healthcare offerings including art cart programs, bedside music, artists-in-residence, medical school arts curriculum and running a full medical center orchestra. The Gifts of Art program maintains nine changing exhibit galleries mounting over 50 shows a year including an annual employee art exhibition as well as building a vibrant permanent art collection. Weekly public concerts, bedside musicians, live music in waiting areas and the cafeteria round out the musical offerings. The Life Sciences Orchestra presents two free public concerts each year providing a creative outlet for caregivers, scientists, staff and students. Elaine is serving her fourth term on the Board of The Society for the Arts in Healthcare. She is also a consultant for the SAHCS consulting service and speaks regularly at conferences. Elaine is a member of the Ann Arbor Commission for Art in Public Places and the Percent for Art Task Force. She also serves on the UM Health System Environment of Care Committee and the Interior Design Standards Committee. Elaine particularly enjoys collaborating with University and community partners in exploring, promoting and expanding the world of arts in healthcare.

 

June 5      Key Elements of the Zingerman’s Experience: Building a Community of Businesses
Ari Weinzweig.        Founding partner of Zingerman’s Community of Businesses.
Ari Weinzweig will share the elements that bind the various Zingerman’s businesses together into a community among themselves, as well as tie them to the Ann Arbor Community as a whole. Ari Weinzweig is one of the founding partners of Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, which includes Zingerman’s Delicatessen, Bakehouse, Creamery, Catering, Mail Order, ZingTrain, Zingerman’s Coffee Company and Zingerman’s Roadhouse, a full service restaurant featuring traditional American foods, beers and wines. Zingerman’s produces and sells all sorts of full-flavored, traditional foods in its home of
Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ari is the author of a number of articles and books, most recently, Zingerman’s Guide to Good Parmigiano-Reggiano, Zingerman’s Guide to Giving Great Service (Hyperion), and Zingerman’s Guide to Good Eating (Houghton Mifflin). He was recognized as one of the “Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America” by the 2006 James Beard Foundation.  

                       

June 12    Daring to be Different

Lana Pollock. President of the Michigan Environmental Council since 1996, Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board Member, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the National League of  Conservation Voters Education Fund, Trustee of NextEnergy, which supports economic development with alternative energy sources and Governor’s Appointee to the Michigan Land Use  Leadership Council in 2003.   

As a legislator, Lana represented Washtenaw County residents in the State Senate for 12 years. She became a leading advocate for the environment and sponsored Michigan's landmark polluter pay statute, saving taxpayers $100 million by forcing polluters to pay for waste cleanup, before the law was repealed. In 1997, she was a fellow at the Institute of Politics at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. Lana grew up in Ludington, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan, earning a B.A. in Political Science and an M.A. in Education. In 2002, she was inducted into the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. Lana will speak about her life as a legislator and since then as an activist and leader for environmental  
causes.

     

June 19    Tales From the Sky: The Survival Flight Program at the
University of
Michigan Hospital
James M. Sprang, R.N. Flight Nurse, Survival Flight at the University of MichiganHospital.
James Sprang will describe activities of the Flight Team and describe their aircraft. Several illustrative case studies will be part of his presentation.

 

This Lecture Series was planned by Virginia Rezmierski, Esther Rubin, Frances Weinstein, and Edwin Marcus, Chair
